Abstract: Suburbanization is one of the stages of urban development.Some scholars suggest that the big cities in China have generally entered the stage of suburbanization.This paper examines in details the city of Beijing which is described earliest by the scholars to be typical of suburbanization.Since the 1980s,concentration has mainly characterized migration in Beijing.Change in population distribution is a result of adjusting population in central urban districts.Urban development is represented by geographical expansion of the central urban districts.This suggests that urban development in Beijing is in the stage of urbanization rather than suburbanization.Characteristics in population change in different stages of urban development from urbanization to suburbanization are discussed,and the author argues that the big cities in China,with the exception of Shanghai,are still in the stage of urbanization.

摘要： 郊区化是城市发展的一个阶段。一些学者认为,中国的大城市已普遍进入郊区化时期。文章对学者们最早提出的郊区化典型城市——北京作了详细讨论,认为从20世纪80年代以来,北京人口流动的主流是集中,人口分布的变化是市区人口调整,城市发展是市区地域扩张,因此,它应该属于城市化阶段而不是郊区化。文章阐述了城市从城市化到郊区化过程中,不同发展阶段城市各区域的人口变动特征,认为中国大城市的发展,除个别城市,如上海市外,目前尚处于城市化阶段。
