The major structural and institutional changes have not been accounted for in the existing empirical studies of impact of demographic dividend on economic growth in China. This paper examines the impacts of demographic dividend on economic growth by using Error Correction Model and time series data from 1978 to 2008.The model incorporates variables representing structural change and institutional transition. Results show that fixed asset investment has the greatest influence on China’s economic growth, followed by technological progress, institutional transition, and structural change. The impact of the demographic dividend is significant, but it has fewer shares to explain economic growth. Thus,in the future, with gradual disappearance of the demographic dividend,China needs to rely more on investment growth, technological progress, structural change and institutional transition.

Using data collected by the authors from the 2008 Shanghai Health and Migration Sample Survey, this paper examines the living conditions and health status of urban migrants.Compared with the local residents, migrants have better physical and mental health but worse living conditions, and particularly they have clear disadvantages in all aspects of housing conditions.Controlling for demographic and socioeconomic variables, the regression results confirms that living conditions is one of the important social determinants of health, but different variables of living conditions have different direction and magnitude of impacts on different health indicators. Moreover, the interaction analysis shows that the impact of living conditions on health generally tend to be weaker for migrants than for local residents, and different variables of living conditions have different impact on these two groups’ health status. This conclusion is important to relevant administrative departments for making policies on improving migrants’ living conditions and health outcomes.

Using data from a survey conducted in 2009 covering four selected areas in China this paper examines patterns and influencing factors for rural migrant workers’ choice in employment destinations. There are individual, family and community characteristics that are significantly associated with employment destinations: age, skills, mechanization of family agricultural production and non-agricultural income ratio of the migrants and development level of their place of origin have significant negative impact on selecting outside province employment.Economic factors have a dominant role in selecting employment destinations.Migration network, transportation facilitation and the household registration system are also among the important factors affecting employment destinations.Policy implications are also discussed in the paper.

Using data of international and national fertility surveys, this paper analyzes the characteristics and changing trends of average birth intervals between the first and second child in different countries and periods with a focus on Chinese women in recent decades.Analytical results indicate that there are some common traits of birth intervals between the first and second child of women in different societies, and a two-year interval is the lowest limit of average "natural birth intervals." It’s necessary to execute restricted regulations of birth intervals between the first and second child in former fertility policies, and it has already achieved great effect. However, with the change of people’s fertility desire and voluntarily delay of the second birth,it is increasingly difficult to intervene in birth intervals by fertility policy, and it will provide good opportunities and conditions for government to adjust and improve relevant fertility policy.

This paper analyzes characteristics and patterns of the population with internal separation of registered and actual residences of Beijing in 2010 using the household registration data. The urban function extended districts and the new districts of urban development are the major places of residence for the population. While sex structure of the population is largely balanced,it is dominated by young and middle-aged people.Inter-district/county separation of registered and actual residences is the majority, with registered and actual residences typically being the neighboring districts. There are adverse consequences for household registration administration and community administration resulting from the increasing population separated from their registered places.Special efforts are needed to collect information of population in actual residences on a regular basis. The paper concludes with discussion on policy suggestions dealing with the problem.

The rural family planning rewards policy has been greatly appreciated in rural China, which is being praised ’a significant innovation’ and has won an international reputation for Chinese family planning policy. However,in the context of changing population trends and inevitability of adjusting China’s Family Planning Policy, this article argues that there are political risks in the current family planning policy which aims at low fertility. In view of the situation of the new rural old-age insurance policy being experimented, that paper suggests that the family planning rewards policy be incorporated into the experimental old-age insurance policy, with specific ideas and methods of the policy reform. Finally, the article also discusses the problems that may occur in the policy conversion process and the coping strategies.
