Drawing on the 2005 One Percent Population Survey data and utilizing multilevel modeling techniques, this paper attempts to identify and understand comprehensively factors at multiple levels associated with the unequal contest in access to public resources due to urban-rural registration(hukou) type and locations of registration.Analytical results illustrate that the levels and probability of access to unemployment insurance,old-age insurance and medical insurance among local urban residents,urban-to-urban migrants and rural-to-urban migrants differ significantly, and that all migrants, regardless of hukou type, have a lower likelihood of having social securities than local residents.Within-group difference is also salient – urban-to-urban migrants are more advantaged in access to social securities than rural-to-urban migrants, who are doubly disadvantaged due to rural hukou and being outsiders.Such findings suggest that both hukou types and inside-outside locations of hukou are important for migrants’ access to social securities, and hukou type is more important than hukou location.

From the perspective of both the urban population change and the urban spatial change,China has undergone two urbanization stages by the mid- 1990s.In the latter stage, urbanination is driven by local governments, who controls land use rights and operates spatial urbanization. It has been pushed forward by a series of land laws and regulations. This mechanism possesses three flaws.First, it was not intended to solve the problem of urbanization of the inter- provincial migrants.Second,it brought about pseudo- urbanization, which is inefficient in space utilization.More importantly,it resulted in a macro land- financial risk.Based on the issues stated above, this paper emphasizes that policies should be formulated to adjust and standardize the behavior of local governments managing spatial urbanination, and incentives be designed to promote coordination between urbanization mechanisms and objectives to avoid the above problems.

Work- related injury insurance is an important part of social insurance system of mobile laborers.Quantitative analyses based on 1516 cases from Beijing, Shaoxing and Dongguan were conducted to explore the situation and related factors of work- related injury insurance of mobile laborers.Work status (e.g.,roles,characteristics and stability of job) was found to be the most significant independent variable for work- related injury insurance. Policies ought to be amended to suit the life and work pattern of mobile laborers. On the same time, the mobile workers should enhance their right awareness, and attend social insurance on their own initiative.

The marriage dilemma of involuntary bachelorhood is a prolonged phenomenon of rural China in the context of universal marriage.Using empirical materials that merged with nationwide survey data, press reports and in- depth interviews, this paper explores marriage dilemma of rural involuntary bachelors in marriage market from gender inequality perspective. The results show that marriage dilemma of rural involuntary bachelors both reinforces and is reinforced by forms and relations of their economic and social inequalities.Involuntary bachelorhood is due to the condition that these males cannot meet the anticipation of mate selection in the marriage market. We argue that involuntary bachelorhood is jeopardized not so much by the availability of brides as by gender inequality effects in the marriage market.

Based on the data from a sampling survey of rural families of aged parents(50+) with one child across 5 counties(or districts),China,we have found that over half of the families have not become "richer with fewer children",one of the most famous propaganda slogans in family planning work. The daily life of aged parents in these families has not been secured.Over half of these families have an income lower than the national poverty line;nearly 80% of the parents over 50 years old are living in some degree of economic shortages.Given their contributions to population control in China, more economic support should be provided to them.

Based on economic, social and environmental panel data of eight counties in Bijie Prefecture between 1987 to 2007,this article explored the impact of resource environment, economic level and social development on changes of population distribution. The findings are multifaceted.First, the population quantity and density in these eight counties have increased steadily with a similar growth pattern and trend, although the pace of growth varies, suggesting regional disparities.Second, the effect of natural environment on population redistribution has been weakened over time to a lesser extent, which indicates that natural factors have an ingrained impact on the changes of population distribution.Third, the effect of economic and social development, particularly GDP per capita and the quality of medical care,on the changes of population density has been strengthened. Finally, each county in Bijie Prefecture exhibits obviously distinctive characteristics in terms of the dynamic trend of population density, although they share same impact of resources environment, the social and economic development.

The oldest old have a higer demand for care, but their satisfaction with the current care provision is not high.Although the home-based elderly service has been rapidly developed, care support remains to be provided by family members, and the elderly have a low utilization of social services. This study has found that age, health status, economic status and place of residence of the oldest old have significant impact on care satisfaction. These findings suggest that in the process of improving the care satisfaction of the oldest old,the government and society should scientifically plan the home-based care services, provide better support for the oldest old who are in poverty, have poorer cognition and live in empty nest, pay more attention to the construction of the family harmony among generations, accelerate the development of professional social workers, and strengthen international exchanges.
