Using data of Chinese censuses in 1982,1990,2000 and 1% sample survey in 1987 and 2005,this paper analyses the distribution trends of floating population in China at region, province, and city levels.Distribution of floating population presents obvious central tendency. From regional perspective, the floating population increasingly concentrated in the eastern region, the eastern and southern coastal areas. From provincial perspective, floating population increasingly concentrated in few provinces. The first five largest migration destination provinces absorbed half of the country’s floating population. From city perspective, floating population increasingly concentrated in a few cities, showing outstanding polarization. In the early 21st century, there is an emerging city band comprising 35 coastal cities, absorbing more than half of the floating population in China.Distribution concentration trend of the floating population will continue, which constitutes the prerequisite for policy making regarding the floating population.

In the past, almost all the accuracy evaluations of China’s population census data represented a high quality and there was no specific age mantissa orientation. However, the survival-rate analysis of the two censuses shows the existence of systematic errors of demographic data and the age mantissa orientation. In this paper, the author presents a new method to test the accuracy of the population age data, and uses this method to analyze China’s census data to find out that the age mantissa orientation of demographic data does exist. The author also finds that the age mantissa orientation and the error differ from each other in the five times of population censuses. Finally, the author tells us that the first and fifth population census has a better data-accuracy than other censuses.

The 6th National Population Census of China will be taken place in November 2010. It is believed that there will be more and severe challenges and difficulties in the 2010 census. How to meet the challenges and solve the difficulties is vital to census data quality. In this "Population and Development Forum", three census and data analysis experts are invited to discuss these issues. Professor Gu Baochang, from Center for Population and Development Studies of People’s University of China, assessed the historical importance of the 2010 census in the context of sustained low fertility, rapid ageing, rapid urbanization and massive migration in China. What he conveys is that our thinking has fallen behind the rapid and unprecedented demographic changes that are taking place in China. Dr. Wang Guangzhou, from the Population Institute of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, discussed more technically on the census. He argues that the only solution to the difficulties is innovation, innovation in design of migrant survey, innovation in benefit-oriented mechanisms of census organization and conduct, and innovation in techniques in census chain of command. Dr Cui Hongyan, from the Population Section of National Bureau of Statistics of China, has been directly involved in the 2010 census design. She introduces the major innovative steps taken in the 2010 census in order to improve data accuracy, .the most important of these is the change of enumeration approach from permanent (de jure) residents to actual (de facto) population.

Using the data set of the fourth National Health Care Service Survey conducted in 2008,this study explores the relationship between the parental migration and the remaining children’s health wellbeing. We find that there are significant differences in health condition and healthcare utilization between the children living with both parents and the children left behind in rural area:the children left behind by the migrating parent(s) are much easier to get sick and also have higher probability to get outpatient service than the children living with both parents at home;besides that, there are big differences within the children left behind, especially the children whose mothers are migrating out are the most vulnerable group:they get the highest risk to get sick while lowest possibility to get treatment.

This paper conducts cluster analysis on health differences across provinces and health imbalance within provinces in China at four dimensions of life expectancy, maternal and child health, health service resources and public health. Results show that areas with longer life expectancy have better maternal and child health and more adequate health services, while their problems are insufficiency of utilization of health services and relative high infectious disease morbidity and mortality.Regions with lower life expectancy tend to face more pluralistic problems. This may provide policy implications for health promotion and intervention. The paper also discusses issues of pre-marital examination rate, physical examination rates, utilization of beds, and structure of infectious diseases.

In this paper,we use Todaro migration model as the main tool to analyse current phenomenon of large-scale migrant workers returning home. This paper considers that expected income gap between rural and urban areas influences the supply of labor force;the demand for labor is affected by urban real wages and the policy parameters;the financial crisis being an exogenous variable affects the labor supply-demand balance. Finally we advance relevant policies according to Todaro migration model.
